My parents died when I was small and I lived a very comfortable luxury life with my grandparents. Now I live in USA and doing well in life. Every year I go to Sri Lanka and used to give a big Dane for Buddhist monks and during the past 4 years I have stop that and now every year I go to a orphanage in Sri Lanka and buy these kids school supplies, give a nice meal and take them to a beach or a park. Some of these kids have never seen a beach or a park. What Mr. Suraj Mapa has done is excellent. I have no words to express my feelings. May the triple gem bless on you and your family now and always for the good thing you have done. I am a real Buddhist and I never visit Temples or worship monks any more. I always help people with disabilities and practice Budda’s teaching. In USA and all the other countries all top politicians spend there X Mas and new year day or holidays with these kind of kids.

i hope this will catch on as a trend for genuine reasons or otherwise since it will benefit all the deserving children in SL.
for #16, dont give a shit for detractors, buddhism was saved from foreign invasions due to a few monks who lived according to lord buddha's principles and even now there are a minority who will defend their lives to safe guard buddhism (not pseudo patriotism and chauvinism) if it comes to that point, but i sincerely doubt whether you can find those kind of buddhist monks living in well to do temples.
for all who are showing an interest in helping deserving kids, if its possible to visit there is an orphanage in front of savoy cinema (along the wellawatte canal), its not visible to the road, whats only visible is a buddha statue, need to walk down to see the place.
despite being in such a busy location, it seems forgotten by society and they really need some help beyond the usual donation of a meal
i have been involved with the place for the past 5 years but there is a limit to what few individuals can do.
i dont want to brag about what we have been doing but any small help will go a long way
until i came to that place i never believed such a struggling orphanage can exist in that location and no matter what hardship they have the kids still know how to smile...
so please if anyone who reads this and feels like making a difference please try to visit the place and see for yourself before making a decision.
i wish i can give more details such as contact numbers but i am not sure whether it is a good idea.
anyways if anyone asks how did you come to know about the place, please say from "gossip lanka" and that would suffice.
if anyone wants further details of the place please post a message to the admin and will find a way to share it on an one to one basis
if anyone thinks im making an advertisement or seeking cheap publicity for an orphange all i can say is....."take the effort to visit the place, walk around, see for yourself, tell the madam in-charge to the face that you are wasting peoples time and you are running a sham operation and then you can reply to this comment"..thank you

Do you belive in all those idiotic Gods who our people worship? If those gods were there how come they could not catch a dangerous terrorist like Prabakaran for 30 years? You guys got to wake up. You guys live in a dream world with your f *ing monks and other religions. Please touch your head and see if you are getting 2 horns first. If you want to know other religions watch Bill Maher’s documentary Religulous. This is all crap and who knows the truth. History was written by the ruling parties and they will not write anything bad about the ruler. All this big Palacess and temples and churches you worship today is build by slavery and torture. No wonder Sri Lanka is still under one of the developing countries for the last 2500 years. Is there any transparency of accounts or summery of what is happening to all the donations get to these so called Buddhist temples or Devala? While I was in Sri Lanka I went to Habarana with one of the famous Basnayaka nilames to one famous Devale in Sri Lanka and he was eating wild bore pork and drinking Whisky with others. After 3 days he was attending a poojawa for a innocent villager and he asked them to come without eating any meat or fish for 7 days. These are all laws made by these people. Even Buddah died after eating Wild bore Pork.

You both are doing good by helping the orphanages instead of religious institutes. I agree with comment 45, there is only a handful of Buddhist priests who now really follow the Dhamma. I have witnessed to my own eyes how some priests collect wealth and how they demand what they like to eat when dana is served (most often they like it when the dana is catered from a 5 star hotel).
I am no anti-Buddhist and what I say here is the truth. Same goes to Christian priests. One of our leading foreign banks has some famous Buddhist and Catholic priests as their high net-worth customers. How these priests were able to accumulate so much wealth, only God up above would know. Look at what happened during the Golden Key debacle - many Buddhist and Catholic priests had their money invested. For what? To get high interest rates. To do what? Certainly not to help society but help themselves to lead super luxury lives!
I myself have been to the orphanage you are talking of in Wellawatte (opposite Savoy). Yes, those little ones do need help - as much as so many others spread all across the country. We should give dana and help these children to come up in life. Not give dana to fatten some people who do nothing - and we would never gain any merit just because they are priests!
I do the same what comment 16 has said. Since my father's death, I help out poor families or children in orphanages, just so I know that my money is not wasted and my father receives merit.
I also commend Suraj Mapa for this generous and thoughtful deed. We as Sri Lankans, be it Buddhist, Christian, Hindu or Muslim need to help those who need help. Not those who lead dubious lives pretending to be holy.
